Digital Health Applications
App on Prescription
The limited amount of psychotherapy covered by statutory health insurance companies in Germany leads to long waiting times for patients. Certified health apps (“DiGA”), such as the Mindable apps, can help here. As a licensed doctor or psychotherapist in Germany, you can prescribe Mindable (via a form called “Muster-16”) to your patients. All statutory health insurance companies cover the costs. The prescription is budget-neutral for you.

Mindable is a DiGA - what does that mean?
“DiGA” is German and an abbreviation for “Digitale Gesundheitsanwendung”, which can be translated to “digital health application”. It is a certificate that implies several things: All DiGAs are CE-marked medical devices whose main function is based on digital technologies. This main function is to support the detection, monitoring, alleviation or treatment of diseases or the detection, alleviation, treatment or compensation of injuries or disabilities through digital technologies. A DiGA is therefore a “digital assistant” in the hands of the patient. Mindable is also a DiGA and is therefore listed in the official DiGA directory of the independent governmental agency “BfArM”, wich regulates both pharmaceutical products and medical devices in Germany. Psychotherapists and doctors can prescribe Mindable on prescription. The costs are covered by the statutory health insurance funds.
What must be indicated on the prescription?
Mindable can be prescribed in Germany via the so-called form “Muster-16”. The prescription must contain the “Pharmazentralnummer” (abbr. PZN) of Mindable. The PZN is a standardized identification code for drugs, medical devices and other pharmacy products in Germany. The prescription must also contain the name of the DiGA:
Digital Health Application PZN 17454202 Mindable: Panic & Agoraphobia or
Digital Health Application PZN 19166938 Mindable: Social Phobia
Diagnosis and duration of the prescription do not have to be stated on the prescription. If you print out prescriptions via your German practice management system, you can find them by searching for Mindable or the PZN. Alternatively, you can also issue a doctor's letter with a confirmed diagnosis. Simply use our template for statutory insured patients or privately insured patients for this purpose.
Can psychotherapists also issue prescriptions?
Yes. Psychotherapists are also allowed to issue DiGA prescriptions. Mindable is prescribed on a health insurance prescription (Form 16 or statutory/private health insurance template). Prescription blocks can be ordered from your German statutory health insurance association and the respective publishers. You can also order our free practice material with pre-printed Form-16 forms.
Can I get insight into the therapy progress of my patients?
Yes. Mindable creates statistical evaluations of symptom progress and exercises. Your patients can share these with you via PDF export, either digitally or as a printout. This provides you with important information not only for the sessions but also for applications and patient reports.
How do privately insured patients get access to the app?
Privately insured individuals initially pay the costs for Mindable themselves. Many private health insurance companies already cover the costs. We recommend inquiring with health insurance companies in advance.
What is the difference between a common health app and a DiGA like Mindable?
A so-called health or wellness app can be any available digital application on the international market. Manufacturers can offer these freely and are not subject to any review or monitoring. DiGA on the other hand, are selected apps or web-based applications that may only be offered on the German market after a strict state review process. They are reviewed under German law by the independent governmental agency “BfArM”, wich regulates both pharmaceutical products and medical devices in Germany. Additionally, DiGA are medical devices and are also subject to the strict quality and safety standards of the Medical Devices Act. Furthermore, only DiGA can be prescribed by doctors and psychotherapists and reimbursed by statutory health insurance.
